I wouldn't count on Carfax. Carfax is built around voluntary reporting of data when cars get into accidents. Proof: my wife got in a really bad front corner collision in a Volvo V70 back in 2002. Went from a $19K damage adjustment(2000 under total at the time)to a $22,500 final repair bill. When I decided to trade it in after numerous problems following the accident, I ran my own Carfax on it and it came up clean because it was never totalled and shop that repaired it didn't report the damage to Carfax.
