I agree on all you said Ed. The 9-5 is quite reliable. Mine had a few hiccups early in her life - DIC failure that took the turbo and the cat, dead fuel pump - but since then, she was quite reliable.
However, and this is the important point, I was quite proactive on the maintenance front. Always followed the OEM maintenance schedule, down to the brake fluid and coolant service, with oil changes at 8000 miles with full synthetic and Mann filters. I never let repairs or rust spots take the car into the old car spiral toward the scrapyard. That's a key point on any sophisticated old vehicle, especially an old european wagon...
In my case, since I'm doing all my stuff, it was just a matter of ordering parts, call a few friends, and replenish the beer fridge. That's my way to drive nice cars for not too much expense. And gather old friends in a garage around a nice Swede once in a while...
