XWD propshaft parts and maintenance Posted by magalar [Email] (#1325) [Profile/Gallery] (more from magalar) on Tue, 13 May 2014 10:52:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi everyone,
I hear a faint "squish-squish" noise from the underside of the car. Frequency is quite hight, like 2 or 3 hz for walking pace, so I ruled out noise from the wheels and CVs. I'm wondering, guessing would be more accurate, if it's not one of the propshaft u-joints ? That center shaft is quasi rigidly mounted to the chassis, so the u-joints are always in the same position. I quite sure they could get "sticky" by resting on the same spot all the time.
My old 83 Quattro did that, and In had to replace the single u-joint myself. Since no parts were available separately, I dug into a u-joint catalogue just to find which joint would fit. A joint from a Suzuki XL-7 was an exact match, all for 20$ and a couple of hours of light work.
Now, the XWD. I have 3 questions.
1 - Can I unbolt the 2 middle propshaft supports from the floor and "exercise" the u-joints with a greater angle for a while ? That would get rid of any stickyness quickly, and I can then decide if any of the joints needs replacing. Speaking of which...
2 - Anyone knows the dimensions (or part number) of the u-joints ? I'd like to order some before dismantling, just in case... I do know they are not available via Saab or GM...
3 - And if no one knows the part needed, I will then have to remove it and find it myself. So, anyone drove an XWD without the propshaft ? Not that I wanted to do this forever, but just long enough for me to repair the propshaft with new joints.
Thanks in advance,
magalar
