Thanks Anders for the reply. I'd say the oil pump is the first item I will have my mechanic look at. The symptoms of excessive noise/clatter at idle, but no noise/clatter above idle seems to point at an oil pump providing inadequate oil pressure. Does this seem logical?
What I do not understand, is why the clatter increases as the engine warms up. (There is no clatter at idle when the engine is cold, but the clatter increases linearly as the engine nears normal operating temperature).
What relationship could there be between engine/oil temp and the increase in noise in the above scenario?
Can you tell me what the normal range for oil pressure should be at idle?
Thanks so much!
