I'm told by the (former) SAAB dealer in Rochester, NY, that my '08 9-3 V-6 Aero has unknown engine issues-possibly a timing chain tensioner. They tell me that they will need to open the engine, and that requires R & R of the powertrain. I'm told the cost of the entire process will be $2800, with the cost of whatever parts that are needed additional to that charge.
I discussed this with another shop that I use regularly; they tell me the book calls for 7 to 25 hours labor to complete the above process, depending on how deep the tech needs to dig into the engine.
Does this seem like fair/reasonable pricing or practice for the dealer to charge the maximum # of hours the book calls for(25 hours labor X $112/hour). Wouldn't it be more reasonable to charge for R&R, and for opening the engine to take a look at the suspected problem/parts?
Your opinions are sought and greatly appreciated!
