Almost all are hydraulic and spring driven with a ratchet system just like the 16V Saab have had since 1984.
Thinking more of it, the 8 valve H engine I think had an oil pressure source too behind the spring loaded chain tensioner.
Back in the days, Mercedes had a pure hydraulic tensioner without ratchet system and if you didn't back fill the oil filter and crank up oil pressure after an oil change, you could end up with damaged timing chains before the tensioner had taken up the slack again.
The early Sport Sedan with 4 cyl engines had problems with the timing chain tensioner where the ratchet system gave way and the hydraulic could not keep up and in some cases resulted in a broken timing chain.
Sometimes the quick fix at the dealer was to pull out the tensioner and reset it and shove it back in but the safer way was to install a new one and check that guides and chain was unhurt.
