Well, after reading all the posts about the complexity of that job, I did wait a bit before attacking it. I was prepared to sweat over that engine for hours, breaking every ECU connector and shattering vacuum plastic hoses. So I brought out the tool box from the basement, called a friend with real mechanics skills, and told everybody I was gone for the whole evening.
But then, a full 15 minutes later, we had the 6 coils out of the engine and were attacking the plugs. That's IT ? All that fuss for just that ? Jeez, we just used 3 tools : a 1/4 inch drive with a 7mm and a 10mm sockets, and a small screwdriver. Overall, I think a good knowledgeable mechanic can do it in less than an hour, including the plugs.
The check valve at the back was indeed toasted, but I ordered a VW check valve (058 905 291K, made by ATE) for less than 10$ including shipping from a guy in California. I replaced the black plastic hoses with Mercedes high-temp silicone tubing (blue colored and fabric braided) and added some small collars to keep things in place under boost.
The coils I ordered were AC/Delco D501C, 160$ for 6 from "ecaronline", NY, on eBay. The parts are Made in China, and the box states these are for Caribean and Mexican markets. We'll see how long they last, but for now, they cured the misfiring.
So, overall, that job is really not out of reach for a week-end mechanic. Try doing the power steering hoses and cooler on a 9-5 : that's a real PITA, believe me.
