Like everyone, I don't like to throw away good parts but I don't want to be stranded because of a lack of preventative maintenance. So, instead of doing the coils and the plugs together at 60k miles, I just did the plugs. Coils were still fine, no misfire or CEL or anything. I'll wait until a misfire appears to replace them all.
Well it didn't take long. It looks coils don't like removal because misfire appeared at the first acceleration of the first road test afterward... Thinking of the fact the plugs I removed from the car were still looking perfect, I makes me wonder how long I could have drive that car with the old plugs/coils...
I measured resistance for all the old parts, and indeed cylinders 3 and 5 coils showed higher resistance on the secondary. Their brass plug under the rubber boot were darker and duller than the ones of the other 4 coils. Clearly, these 2 coils had a tougher life than the others. Odd cylinders are the ones at the back, with cylinder 1 being nearest the belt/chain drives.
My advice ? Be prepared : buy coils and plugs, add the check valve tubing and the purge valve, but wait until you feel misfire to replace them.
