We see it all the time (not trying to pick on Salty), and there will be plenty here who will swear up/down, left/right that (insert Model here) was SO much better.
If you're talking simple straight-line acceleration in snow, it's primarily TIRES, then weight distribution and ground clearance, the last two not necessarily in that order. IF (insert Model here) was SO much better, AND it had the exact same tires AND it weighed the same (to take into account tire width vs weight), THEN it HAD to have more weight bias on the drive wheels. None of the cars we're comparing have limited-slip differentials, there is simply no other explanation. Perhaps (insert Model here) had less hp and you could better modulate how much gas you gave it.
IF you want to get into control once moving then besides TIRES, overall handling ability will have an effect, and the 9-3SS Aero handles very well.
TIRES, TIRES, TIRES!!!
Ed
2007 9-5 Aero SC [60th] (winter tires in the winter)
2004 9-3 Aero (winter tires in the winter)
2005 9-5 Aero
2005 9-5 Arc
2002 9-5 Aero SW (taken out by Bambi)
1999 9-5 SE(6) SW (brief interim between the '02 and the '07)
1999 9-5 SE(4) (taken out by daughter on icy road)
p.s.
your car also has TCS and ESP, and both work very well in SAAB's.
It's going to be a better winter car than your 9000, other than perhaps lower ground clearance for deep snow.
