I am an original owner of the launch model 2003 9-3SS Linear, and I have linked to a prior posting of mine that identifies all of the issues I have had with the car. It may seem like a long list, but most of the big issues were fixed under warranty at no cost to me.

The biggest issues - money wise - are the fan control assembly (the early models lacked a rain guard, which was installed when the fan assembly was replaced), and the rear main seal (which I understand later models used a different design, but 2004 may still have the old style seal).

Also, the 9-3 is strange since the rear brakes wear out faster than the fronts. Saab engineers defied the laws of physics when they designed these brakes. And don't let that one go too long without replacing the pads since OEM calipers cost a small fortune.

Despite the long list, it really is a great car - still looks and drives beautifully. No rust at all - and I live in New Jersey. Not many Hondas or Mazdas of that vintage can make that same claim.

I plan on keeping it until something really significant fails, and then I'll treat my wife to something new and fancy with the little TV screen in the dashboard that is all the rage these days. But she still loves her 9-3, which really is saying something. I mean, how many non-Saabers still love their 11 year old cars?
