I pulled the vents out and removed the fascia, which was probably not necessary.
Removed the driver side kick panel along the center console and the kick plate below the dash on driver side. This gives 'access' to the motors on the driver side (left hand drive). The lower motor (red lever attached) controls the heat mix for the driver side. The upper motor, which I couldn't get to operate, turn out to control the defrost flap for both sides (at least a major portion of the defrost flow). I popped the lever off the motor shaft and I have air blowing on the windshield!
Doubtful I'll replace the motor, I always prefer to have a mix with the defrost anyway.
FWIW, I had confirmed last year operation of all the motors on the passenger side.
I rarely use the car outside of winter but a couple sultry errands with a foggy windshield was worse that a frosting windshield in subzero temps.
Found it quite a pisser that the car won't start with the radio removed, that's a pretty awesome feature, luckily the head unit sucks enough that it's not likely to get stolen.
