Leaving a manual in gear, forward or reverse?

Hey Everyone:
As the subject implies, I have a manual and I typically leave it in neutral and engage the hand brake. Well, as cold weather is approaching, the brake stuck on me pretty bad. After removing the rim, I discovered the problem was in the cable, not the caliper or spring. Soon, I freed the cable and after lots of silicon spray, the brake is functioning properly. But, in order to mitigate this happening again, I'd like to leave the car parked in gear without the brake, assuming it's fairly level of course. My question is, if I leave the car in 1st, will that keep it from rolling forward only, and likewise with reverse? Or, will being in a gear hold her both ways?
As always, thanks ahead of time for your help.
