I put the car away for the winter after posting this problem in Sep 2012. Sometime in the spring of 2013 I installed an Autozone Duralast thermostat. This completely fixed the overheating until this month (November 2014). The Autozone thermostat is now stuck in the open position so the car is running cold.
I'm picking up a $12 Stant thermostat from Advance Auto today. Very discouraging that the Autozone thermostat lasted no more than 18 months and 8,000 miles.
For anyone who needs to know, the installation takes about 15 to 30 minutes. Something minor (which I can't remember this second) needs to be pulled out of the way or removed. Then the thermostat housing is easy to unbolt with a 1/4 drive and appropriate socket (3 bolts as I recall). A strong flashlight makes everything easy to see. (I may have gotten a few details wrong, so forgive me.)
You guys are a great asset, and thanks for your help over the years.
