Just got my 2006 Saab 9-3 Convertible in August, so I don't have much first hand knowledge with the new generation 9-3s. My Indy Saab mechanic (family business - father, son, grandson) told me NOT to get a six-cylinder Saab. They have been problematic as far as they were concerned.
I looked at a bunch of 2004 and 2005 Saab and they all had problem with the dashboard marking - they all seem to rub off after time.
My 2006 has about 140,000 miles on it but runs very smoothly on the highway and gets about 35 mpg. In the city it more like 25mpg. The car runs a little hard over manhole covers and bumpy roads.
I have found parts to be readily available.
My two kids and I have owned about 12 Saabs in total. This was the first beyond 2002 and I am happy with it.
I would like to think that an AERO is not too much for a college graduate to handle and take care of. My son also is a recent graduate and takes care of his 2002 Saab 9-3 SE and drives responsibly (or at least as far as I can tell)
Good luck to you and him.
