ACC Fan acting up

Wife complained about her Defroster not working, so I took her car to work today. I haven't driven home yet, but initial observation is that the fan (not related to Defrost mode) is having problems.
When first started, and in AUTO, couldn't hear fan, manually increased to HIGH, still couldn't detect airflow. I can hear flappers moving as I changed supply vents. After driving a few minutes the fan started ramping up, seemed to get to HIGH, but even there it seemed to occasionally reduce a little and then speed back up. With the fan at lower speed, I can hear a slight ticking.
Throw in the ticking, and the fan itself seems the likely problem, not the controller. When I get home I'll try to visually inspect (never tried before) from the engine compartment, but even if there is a small piece of debris causing the ticking, and not a "bearing" issue, that doesn't seem like it would prevent it from initially starting.
thanks
Oh, and of course the weather forecast has it in single digits (or less) the next few days. Hopefully not snow/ice also. I guess I know which car she'll be driving the next few (i.e., my 2007). At least the son has another week of College break, if weather real nasty, I can park hers before he takes the 2005 Aero back to Purdue.
