Sounds like the window regulator that failed. It's been a year since I repaired mine, but believe it was the cable that raises/lowers the window that came apart. The passenger rear window fell down and was loose in the door. The motor made sounds, but didn't budge the window.
It was a pretty easy fix replacing the window regulator as long as you feel comfortable pulling the door panel and plastic sheeting off the door frame.
