The two fingers on sending unit are so flimsy and can't take the repeated sliding up and down the resistor board and slowly wears down to nubs.
When you fill the tank full, the fingers goes off the grid for awhile until the fuel level have gone down and they can make contact again with the resistor board.
With your mileage, it might be enough to just change the level sensor but I strongly inform all customers about the pros and cons of doing it due to that it is more labor to change the level sensor alone then to put a complete pump unit in.
But it is also less money for the part compared to a pump unit so you have to calculate your amount of luck that the pump might for some mysterious reasons go bad right after a job like that.
At least I have informed the customer of the possibility of that happening.
