Murphy's law applied to Saab... Posted by magalar [Email] (#1325) [Profile/Gallery] (more from magalar) on Fri, 15 May 2015 13:37:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi there,
Murphy's law : if it can go wrong, it will.
After the big job about the transfer case bearing, I attacked the last bit of prenventative maintenance to be done on the car : serpentine belt and the tenionner pulley. It's a bit more complex than for some other cars, but it can be done by shadetree mechanics like us.
All went well, the belt was worn and cracked, and the pulley bearing was dry but still quiet.
When reinstalling the power steering pump, a pump you must move about 3 mm to get access to one of the tensionner bolts, I mismatched some bolts. In short, I bolted the tensionner with one of the pump bolts which are 10 mm shorter. And then, when bolting the pump with the longer bolt, I heard a "snap" and saw a puddle of fluid on the top of the pump.
Sacrebleu ! I cracked the pump rear cover because the 2 upper bolts were touching togheter ! It's always like that when you can't see what you're doing... That V6 is so thight in this car, no wonder.
Now, the pump is specific to the XWD, for a reason I don't know. Maybe valving ? Anyway, no pump anywhere to be found around here, used or new or refurbished. And not even for the FWD V6, no stock anywhere. Only solution is order one from the States, and wait at least week.
But then, that pump is made by KYB, and a quick internet search in google image showed that some Audi/VW use a similar pump. A4 and Passats with 1.8T engines from 1997 to 2005 are equipped with ZF or KYB pumps. So I manage to find a used KYB out of an 2005 A4. The back cover is not identical, it has a supplemental eyelet for a third bolt, but it fits my pump's body perfectly.
I'll see tonight if everythings fits, if not, I'll have to cut off that 3rd eyelet.
Wish me luck !
