and the SID says - well, they all say different things depending on the year. At launch, the "wrench" came on at what, 10% oil life remaining or **TWO** years, whatever came first. Then the 9-5's oil sludge problem finally came into the consciousness of the powers that be, and from at least 2006 the Two Year override became one year, and a 10,000 mile override was also imposed. Some time after that they got cute and integrated the entire recommended maintenance schedule into the mix, so you never get back to 100% until you perform a major service.
Anyway, addressing the '06 model specifically: **IF** you are using Mobil 1 0W40 or "German Castrol" 0W30, you may safely adopt the SID's message and change when it says to change. That has the advantage of letting you reset the system yourself. Note that the SID perversely requires a Tech II to reset the service calculator for remaining oil life above some limit - 10%?
And addressing the question itself, "What would (do/did) I do?" For the first 3 years of ownership, of course the Company provided oil change services every year, as per the recommendation. The next year I attended the SOC '10 Track Event, so naturally I changed the oil and brake fluid before the event. Later I began using the car (CV) very sporadically, leaving it in Florida over the summer and mainly driving it only when I was alone according to Norma's vocal preference. So here I was with 6 months of use and 6 months sitting on the oil, an oil life remaining of over 90%, and the SID telling me to change it. And yet, were the car a year or two older, it would have allowed me another year. What to do? I got tired of pressing the reset every day, so I changed the date on the clock to a year earlier. Voila, no message, and my oil life remaining was still 90%.
