The offset for the 9-5 wheel is 49mm, while the offset on the 9-3 wheel is 41mm. My guess is that the 9-5 has a larger offset to give more room for the drum parking brake on the rear wheels. If you have the wheels handy, put one on the car and see if it clears the brake caliper. I've tried a bare 17 inch 9-5 on a 9-3 just to see, and it cleared the brake caliper without any problem.
However, 9-5 wheel on a 9-3 is going to put the tire 8mm closer to the spring tower and wheel well, so you could have problems there.
Not much help, I know, but if you can find a friend with a 9-5 with 16 inch wheels, you could put one on and drive around the block.
Let us know what you find out.
