As for a sole fault tracing purpose to see if anything wakes up or behaves differently, you might be able to test a theory by swapping out the part but it might not have full functionality without mating it to the car with a Tech 2.
Some modules throughout the car are more forgiving than others in that aspect.
Are you talking about the visible dash display (ICM) or the main hidden radio (EHU).
With the ICM unplugged, the car won't start since it is a gateway for the network bus.
