You do not need to remove the motor from the car to replace the wiper linkage. However; after removing the old linkage, an act that might result in turning of the motor shaft, you should cycle the wipers once or twice to return the motor to the parked position.
Then, when installing the new linkage be sure to make the short bar of the linkage point directly to the driver's side of the car. This will place the securing nut beneath the linkage but this position is critical to make the wipers swipe correctly.
On my first attempt I did not have the short bar pointed at zero degrees, more like -15 degrees or so. This caused the wipers to jump downwards on each start before arcing upwards.
Finally determined what I did wrong, realigned the short bar, and everything works great now.
