The XWD system has fluid in the front transaxle (ATF or MTF) depending on whether its a manual or automatic.
There is also transfer case located at the back end of the transaxle that has it's own specific fluid.
The prop shaft runs from the transfer case to the clutch pack located at the rear differential. The clutch pack engagement for the rear wheel drive is controlled by its own pressurized fluid supply (aka Haldex Fluid). There is an electric pump, a filter and reservoir. If you have the elsd (electronic limited slip differential) it is also controlled from the same supply.
There is also a mechanical rear differential the takes its own specific fluid whether you have elsd or not.
The Haldex fluid and the conventional differential fluid are the two fluids that are changed when the differential is serviced.
It's a good idea to do the transfer case fluid at the same time.
