I agree with most of what you wrote, except there's very little in common between the 9-3SC and your 9-5.
The 9-3 probably has more room than a BMW of that vintage.
The 2.5 I6 is definitely pokey compared to the Saab 2.0T.
The Saab is more crashworthy than that vintage BMW.
The exterior is more distinctly styled than an E46, for better or worse.
The 9-3 handles much better and runs more smoothly than your (and my) 9-5. As compared to the BMW: while I haven't driven the E46, I drove a 525 of similar vintage and found the handling uncanny. It seemed to sense your thoughts, as compared to the 9K I had at the time, which demanded to be intentionally driven. I think on slippery roads the E46 would be scary absent stability control.
The BMW has higher quality interior materials. Those used (demanded by GM?) in the 9-3 are an insult to the brand. Vinyl sheet over cardboard side material? Scuff prone footwell surfaces? Hard, scuff prone windshield pillar material? Questionable leather quality? Peeling rubbery painted buttons ('04-'06).
Being an older model, the BMW is probably more amenable to home repair.
There's an infinitely greater selection of aftermarket support for BMWs.
BMW has much higher "cachet" factor.
