I've done all my own saab wrenching for 30 years. I'm to the point that I'd rather pay someone else to do it! We are fortunate in our town that we have a DIY garage that you can rent a hoist for $20/hr. So while I've done manual tranny clutch replacements, never done auto tranny torque converter seals. But the quote of $6700 book rate was surprising. I had thought $3000.
The reason for the major refit is to teach my daughter the importance of fixing what you have and not get caught up on consumerism by replacing your car every 3-5 years. I figure if I can replace all the items that are known to fail, she can keep the car for another 10 years with little maintenance, which will give her a leg up financially once she finished school.
