It's confusing because it's two generations of very similar nomenclature that are actually different. My interpretation is 2005-2009 the "X" nomenclature meant AWD. 2010-2011 it meant "SUV," sort of like BMW's X3, X5, etc...
Saab started the "X" nomenclature back in 2005 with the introduction of its only AWD models, the badge-engineered 9-2x and 9-7x. These cars all came with AWD standard, but note that it was never advertised as XWD.
Then it got a little weird when they introduced XWD (developed by Saab and Haldex) in their regular line-up of cars, first in the 9-3 and the later NG9-5 (and 9-4x):
-The "Turbo-X" was a limited run of flagship 9-3 sedans and combi's to introduce XWD as well as commemorate Saab's 30 years of turbocharging. They're ALL 2008's, V6, jet black, and say Turbo-X on the back of them. They all have a unique gauge cluster, steering wheel, seats, rims, rear spoiler, front and rear bumpers, etc... There were 600 brought to the US and something like 2,000-2,500 total ever built.
-After the debut of the Turbo-X, the 2008 Aero's also got optional XWD. 2009 2.0T's and V6's got optional XWD, and 2010-2011 got optional XWD on the 2.0T (they dropped the V6 to supply the NG9-5 assembly line).
-The 9-3X, sort of like the Turbo-X, was a limited run of 2010-2011 9-3 wagons. They got a lifted chassis, and special ground-effects to make it look more off-road, rugged and SUV-ish, a-la Volvo XC70 and Audi Allroad. These were also ALL 2.0T, XWD models.
-In 2010 the NG9-5 Aero got the same XWD setup, and in 2011 the NG9-5 Aero and Turbo6 got XWD (optional on the latter).
-The 9-4X was the SUV that shared chassis with the Cadillac SRX. It was available with FWD and still retained the "X" in 9-4X.
