Well, turns that, in re-reading this post, I was wrong about the original model number and the used (replacement) part number. The original ended in 2571 and the replacement in 3231. It was the 2571 which failed.
Well, the Saab Master Mechanic working on my car mated the 3231 to my car, with new plugs AND new coils and it still didn't run right - misfired badly. Turns out that the 3231 is NOT a replacement for the 2571. (Turned out the 3231 module was defective - no knock data, so it threw a code and no boost on another car where this was the correct ECU - unrelated to the misfire issue in my wife's car)
Anway, 50$ plus like 14$ shipping (from England) and a new used ECU off e-b ay - which is a great place to get parts - and the car runs great even with the original coils.
Long story short, the 03 9-3 with the ECU ending in 2571 will NOT take an ECU off the same car ending in 3231 (which is for more common). Be aware :)
Thanks for the advice and thoughts on this. Just wanted to post the resolution.
