'03 SS Clutch Pedal Clicks Loudly

I have a 2003 9-3 5spd manual. The clutch pedal just recently started clicking violently approximately halfway through its travel. The helper return spring and both end mounts (I've had these break in the past and I first suspected them) appear intact and OK. The travel limit switches appear to be in their correct spots and functioning. The car shifts and works fine, but the noise sounds very bad.
It's nearly impossible to get a good look at the inner workings of the clutch pivot and master cylinder connection--is there an easy way to remove a panel to see what's going on? By removing the headlight switch from the dash, I can see through the hole and when pressing the pedal, what I assume to be a plunger acting on the master cylinder (surrounded by bellows, pushed by pedal) looks to jolt vertically when the click happens. Is this a common failure? How do I further diagnose the problem?
Or is there a cruise control switch that might be the culprit? Something definitely isn't right.
Thanks for any help.
