Sorry for the delay in updating this thread. I wanted to wait until this week’s cold temps to see if the poor idle returned. The outside temp display read 30 when I started the car this morning. Nice, smooth idle as has been the case since I replaced the fuel pressure regulator (FPR) back in mid-October.
I’ve been thinking as to a failure mechanism that could explain the symptoms. I wonder if the root cause is more related to the length of non-use rather than the ambient temperature? (I’m retired and the car may not be started for a day or two.) If the FPR failed in such a way that fuel SLOWLY leaked into the intake manifold via the hose connecting the FPR to the manifold – slowly enough that there was little impact while the engine was running – then during an extended period of not running perhaps enough fuel leaked from the fuel rail into the intake to adversely impact the idle for the first 20-30 seconds on the next start. Might also be the case that as the under-hood temp rises the FRP no longer leaks. (Don’t beat me up if you think this is an idiotic theory.)
I suppose I could put the old FPR back in and see if any fuel comes out of the port connected to the intake manifold after shutdown but it’s unlikely I’ll spend any more time on this.
