No trace of Dexcool anywhere to be found, but the smell was always present at engine shut-off. I've replaced the expansion tank and its hoses, and the cap, but the car was always smelly. Then, I took a good look at the EPC drawing of the cooling system, and found that o-ring right above the water-pump. There was a very little trace of orange "sugar" around it. Upon dismantling, it was obvious : that red o-ring (neoprene ? synthetic rubber ?) was crumbling to pieces, it was all blackened by dirt and heat, there was even a permanent coloration of the stainless steel pipe and aluminum housing... Replacement cured the problem, obviously...
Then, a year later, again, the dreaded smell. This time, it was one of the heater hoses that had a pinhole leak just at the junction of the rubber pipe to the plastic connector. The correct XWD hoses is back-ordered, so I've installed a set of 2 hoses for the FWD V6. I had to cut about 4 in of one of them, and build a few guides so it won't rub on either the firewall or the engine (there's no space back there). All is well now, and I still have the correct XWD hoses that I can have someone duplicate the flexible parts and reuse the plastic connectors if need be.
I would suggest that you do it too, since both of my Saabs had heater pipe leaks at the most inoportune moments... The radiator pipes are much sturdier, but I've bought them too (very cheap...) and will replace them when I'll dig in the area someday. They are now IN the trunk of the car, as a safety measure...
