There's nothing wrong with replacing a pair of dangerously worn tires with two new ones and putting them on the back, so long as they have the same general properties of the two you are keeping. That said, buying in sets of four often results in a cashback savings from the selling company, so it then might not pay to try to squeeze another 10,000 miles from the "good" ones.
I have studied the ratings, both from Consumer Reports and Tire Rack, and as a group:
High performance all season tires in the same performance category have longer life, higher rolling resistance, worse "wet traction", and at least aren't scary bad at the first dusting of snow.
Low Rolling Resistance (RLL) tires are generally all season, tend to have worse traction, shorter life, and a harder ride than other all season, but the best of them (Conti Pure Contact) is actually very good in all regards.
OE tires, even for a performance car like a Turbo X, are not always the best for what you want, as the manufacturer is swayed by longevity, ride, and purchase price.
Hope this helps.
And by the way, don't mix performance types. If you have summer performance tires, don't put two all-season tires on. Hit a slippery patch, and whichever end has the all seasons will hit first, unless it's snow or ice, in which case the end with the summer tires will hit first...
