Cautionary tale regarding tire changes Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Mon, 9 Apr 2018 17:06:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I received a phone call from my wife this morning alerting me that her car had a totally flat rear tire. Unfortunately, she did not discover this until after driving the 4 miles to her work.
I left my job, swung by the house to grab my coveralls, gloves, garage jack, breaker bar, torque wrench, etc. I drove to her work, found the car, raised it up, removed the lug bolts, and the darn wheel was corroded tight to the hub!
I didn't include a mallet or block of wood in my tools.
Luckily she parked close to the Maintenance Garage and she knows all the higher seniority employees, so we had a short length of 4x4 and a engineer's hammer delivered to us very quickly.
Moral of the Story:
Remove your wheels periodically. Clean the hubs. Smear anti-seize or other coating on the hub face to prevent corrosion to the rims.
A new Pirelli tire, mounted and balanced, only cost me $20.25 at Discount Tire. I never buy road Hazard Coverage but apparently I bought it with this set of Pirellis - and I am very glad that I did!
