It's not fun, but not horrible.

I did an engine swap on my '04 Linear a few months back. Instead of the WIS procedure, I suspended the engine with a beam, then dropped the subframe, then pulled the gearbox, then engine from the top. To get at it, I pulled the hood, bumper, lights, radiator, radiator support.

The used engine from the local recycler was quite inexpensive, but I spent the extra coins on a water pump (MUCH easier out of the car), plus seals, coolant hoses, etc. I swapped electronics, harnesses, injectors and sensors from my old engine to the new one.
