I finally did this; without removing the side trim.
I got the old one out without removing the side trim. The thin blade-like flap was hard, brittle, & mostly cracked. Notice the new trim has 3 places with a thick lug molded into the back side. Carefully cut away the old blade-like flap someplace other than those lugs. That makes room to get the old one off.
Carefully get underneath it with a putty-knife sliding upwards along the glass. With that in place to protect the glass, work a screwdriver or something to pry upwards. Then I grabbed it with a needle-nose pliers & pulled it out. Once I got it out I could pull the rest out easily.
Clean the area real good. I waxed the painted part to make it a bit more slippery. Silicone stuff on the new seal to make it slippery. Since I hadn't removed the side trim, I tried to stick the new trim into place at the ends. That worked, so I put both ends in and worked towards the middle. Each end has to be inserted fully until it stops hard. There isn't any extra space. In fact, I used some soapy water to help when I pushed the last bit in.
You'll want to find some curved blade to push it in; I used the side of a drywall-taping knife. With some cloth wrapped around it so it doesn't cut the new trim.
