Mine is always about 7-8% optimistic.

Fill up full tank until at least 3 shut offs and reset your odometer. At the next fill up at the same pump take the odometer reading and divide the gallons filled and get a true reading.

It is probably to late to do this with your old car so it will always remain a mystery.
