I'll take some exception to the V6. I own the 2002 Arc and happen to like the V6 for everyday commuting. It offers good low-end torque, a smooth idle (compared to the 4), and decent mileage. I get 27 MPG or more on the highway. It's pitfall is the expensive cam-belt service and history of leaking oil-water coolers. But it's exempt from soft head bolts, balance chain failures, and sludging. Sludge is really scary to me as I've seen a sludged engine at the SAAB Dealer. Ugly and expensive. I've never heard my V6 ping/detonate on middle-grade or premium fuel. I've never tried regular. I guess we'll see how long the V6 runs?
