V6 Timing Belt Tension Gauge Posted by Greg Bender [Email] (#1027) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Greg Bender) on Thu, 15 Oct 2009 08:38:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi all,
I'm changing out the timing belt and pulleys on my 9-5 SE (6 cylinder; year 2000; 120,000 miles). Using the special tools, I've got the old belt and pulleys replaced with the new belt and pulleys. So far, so good.
However, the WIS makes mention of setting the initial belt tension using the a special tool and the lower idler pulley. Of course, I don't have this special tool, though I think it looks something like this:

Given that the tensioner pulley is spring loaded, I'm inclined to think that the initial belt tension on the lower idler pulley is only used to help get the idler pulley close to the correct position in it's eccentric.
That is, once the crankshaft is rotated a couple revolutions, won't the belt tension equalize across all of the pulleys and the tensioner pulley reflect whether it is too tight or too loose with the reference marks?
If my hypothesis is correct, I shouldn't need to worry too much about the initial belt tension and I should be able to use the reference marks on the tensioner pulley to ensure my belt is tensioned properly.
If I'm wrong, I guess I'll need to purchase a timing belt tension gauge.
All input welcome as to whether or not I need the special tension gauge.
Regards,
Greg Bender
