But the real trick is how they hold up over time

Kia and Hynudai seem to be building very nice cars. I rented a Sonata a couple months back and was thoroughly impressed. For $20-large it's a great value. The Kia Rondo I rented last summer had my back in agony after a mere 2 hours in the car. And it was underpowered with sloppy handling. Funny... the woman at the rental place apologized that it was all they had left and said "nobody wants to rent a Kia!"

But the real test is how they last. A 10 yr/100K mile warranty is nice, but it's only a limited powertrain warranty. If you buy a used one it is only good to 60K miles. The rest of the standard warranty is 5 years/60K miles, and they do have a good rust-through provision and nice roadside assistance features. But Kia has lawsuits against it for not honoring the warranty.

I want to know how the rest of the car holds up. Will it still be solid and safe at 185K like my '96 Saab 9000? Will it still feel great at 106K like my wife's '03 9-5? Or will it be buzzy and loose with the interior bits failing?

Durability doesn't matter if you rent the thing for 3 years, but real value comes over time.
