I'll try and make this short: Back when I removed the engine from my 2001 aero I thought I was going to remove the tranny at the same time. I removed the Passenger side axle from the driver (as I'd always done in every saab I've ever known) only to find that piece that holds the tripod in the driver. Per suggestions here I cut that piece and removed the axle. When I replaced it I found just how difficult it was to install a clamp on what remained of the driver. I made it work now for the last few years but the boot has now split. I just wanted to replace the whole axle and be done with it... apparently, this isn't possible as no one sells the whole axle, despite a number of companies listing the item as being a complete axle. All I really need is the boot, I suppose, but again, I'm not real keen on the clamp issue. Now, while explaining this to my 9 year old son, I showed him the driver's side axle and at the same time, realized that the axle on that side is not the same style as on the other side. It has that extra bit on the shaft (I really don't know what it is for) just like in all the 2002 and later axle pictures. So, do the later axles actually fit? and second, if the driver's side axle is incorrect, if it has worked this far, is it really a problem. I understand these are supposed to be the same on both sides. Thanks for your input.
