Good luck with this. I had my stepping motor off two days ago. I could turn the shaft when the motor was disconnected, but it was really difficult, and I did it using a pair of pliers (gently!) gripping the shaft.
As for the motor working when connected, have you tried connecting the plug module, and then running the ACC diagnostic ("Auto" + "Off" with the engine running)?
