I wouldn't ignore the torn boot. I would address it right away. Didn't see what year or transmission you have, but I replaced the right CV axle on a 2002 9-5 automatic recently with one from NAPA and it was a lot easier than I expected, and not a bad price. That boot keeps the grit out and grease in, and having an opening like that is just asking for trouble. -JerryC
