I would use the 'stethoscope' for this . . . but not the commercial things. A 3 foot piece of vacuum hose (pref silicone) is my tool of choice. Put clean end in one ear, earplug or finger in other when needed. The flexible end is safer than any rod or other rigid device, and you can move it around pretty accurately. You should be able to locate the hiss to within a few inches.
This worked great recently on a non-SAAB with a periodic belt 'chirp', ID'd which pulley, added washer fluid onto belt, and squeak stopped -- I needed a new belt instead of new pulley.
