You can stick a screw driver in and see if you can back off the piston without too much effort.
Caliper pistons and pads are always snug against the rotor and only the slight wobble of rotor when driving pushes the piston back just a hair enough to not over heat the brakes.
It is so little that you won't really see if the way you looked at it.
With foot of the pedal, if you can rotate the brake rotor by hand that is a pretty good measurement that the calipers are not binding.
