2006 xenon cut out / flicker: bad ground or bulbs?

2006 "Dame Edna" style xenon projector lamps. Occasionally (usually when going over rough road or a bump) one or possibly both lights cut out for a split second, as if I turned the lights off.
The car has 102k and both bulbs were replaced about 33k / ~4 years ago. This differs from just "flickering" of the bulbs related to age and failure. The bulbs may also be ready to go, but this seems a separate issue... maybe!
I've seen a few people post about the cause being a bad ground from the negative battery cable (see http://saabnet.com/tsn/bb/9-5/index.html?bID=203369) -- seems like following the cable to the ground should be doable, is there anything else I should be looking for?
Any other tips, aside from checking the ground and replacing bulbs? I did buy quality replacement bulbs pre-emptively, but haven't gotten around to removing the front bumper cover and removing the headlight assemblies, etc--not as much fun as replacing bulbs in the pre-2006 front end!
TIA
Tim B.
