I've done the direct replacement of the bypass valve, but have read about the Mackay substitution so I bought one several years ago as a spare. I was really having a problem getting my head around how two hoses were going to replace all the stuff back there. I'm still not sure how this is all going to come apart and go back together, but assume taking it all apart will show me the way. Still doesn't look easy but I'll sort that out at the time.
In the meantime, I sent my wife to the Detroit metro airport to pick up her brother while I studied how to take things apart, and check the leak. Turns out there was no antifreeze on the paper I left under her car, and the 'coolant low' light went away. I checked the reservoir and it was just a bit below normal. Seems it is not leaking at all, and the original puddle under the middle of the car was water from rain or snow or something other than the red stuff.
Will replace the bypass valve when it gets warmer if it holds up. I do have the cable pliers as well as the fixed clamp release. What is he hose removal tool? Anders talked about using a razor blade to cut and scrape the old hose off.
Still trying to find a couple of Mackay replacement hose sets since the bypass valve has a rep of leaking.
Thanks again to all for your comments.
