Transmission temp might have still been quite cold even after engine shows "middle" on gauge. I am not certain what I would make of the 'no codes' and 'no transmission light'.

This reminded me that I forgot to post a SOLUTION a similar problem last winter. This is not necessarily your problem - but IF it is, then there is hope to fix for $200 in parts.

A year ago one of my daughters had problems with the transmission on her '06 SC when it got really cold. She called my cell phone and said that the car wouldn't go, and that the gear light was on. I asked if she had allowed the engine to warm up fully before starting out - she said 'not really'. After warming for about 10-12 minutes she drove 3 miles to work. I checked OBDII codes the next day and got a P0962 ("Line Pressure Control Solenoid Low") code.

Because I had already done a T-IV fluid drain-fill-drive-repeat fluid change for her during the summer, I feared it was time for a new transmission. A member on another SAAB board posted his replacement of the three Linear Solenoids in the valve body of the Aisin Warner T55 automatic transmission. These transmissions are very robust, but can have a problem with junk collecting in the linear solenoids, especially if the fluid changes were neglected early in the car's life. I ordered a set of all three Linear Solenoids made by Rostra (in USA). This replacement solenoid kit for just the three linear control solenoids cost me just over $200. The Rostra solenoids have an improved design with a back-side opening to allow debris to be swept away by the fluid. I successfully replaced them myself last Summer. The car has driven over 5K miles since then with no issues.

This in-car fix is possible on SAAB 9-5's only because the valve body can be accessed without removing it completely or removing the transmission - some Nissan and Volvo owners are not as lucky.

I linked to my original posts from last year.

Hope this helps someone avoid a transmission rebuild.
