I'm maintaining two '06 Sport Combi's w sport option. They are at about 111K and 135K miles. I've replaced the fuel pump in the 135K car, and I plan on doing the one in the other car this summer sometime.

While you can see the pump in these cars, and still use the under seat access to disconnect electrical connectors, the pump is not replaceable without dropping the tank. The lines are rigid, AND the retaining ring was redesigned to require a specialized tool and 1/2" breaker bar to remove and to reinstall. There is a fuel filter, but it's smaller and integrated into the pump assembly. Diagnosing check valves can be done by attaching a fuel pressure gauge onto the fuel rail, running the pump (jumper from 12V to the fuel pump fuse contact), checking the pressure, and then waiting to see if the pressure is maintained and for how long. If pressure leaks away then the check valves and/or the injectors are leaking. [Caution to readers: Don't do this without training and equipment to it safely.]

I am with you on not replacing the pump unless it's needed - it's just that my daughters drive these cars, and I don't want them stranded. Though not identical, the newer style pump cartridges are not a big redesign from the older ones. From what I have seen on this board, I think that average pump lifetime only appeared better because the cars were newer and there were fewer of those cars sold. Before I changed out the pump on the higher mileage car, it had a crank-no-start that seemed to be an early symptom of pump failure. I figure this job is a one-time repair per car if I use a quality TI / SAAB oem pump.

Just my two cents - hope it gives you a little more background.
