I have 2 2001 Aeros. Both received new rear shocks in the 100,000 mileage range. the stock chocks are good for 60k to 80k it seems. Bilstein is a high quality replacement at a reasonable price, that last a long time.
I have Konis on one car and Bilstein on the other.
It is VERY important that you check the ride height. Your Aero should have 610mm between the lower edge of the wheel well opening through the center of the whee to the end of the wheel where the tire begins.
I am sure it is less than this. Add the right size spring spacer to bring it up to 610mm or even 615 or so. You could put in new springs if you wanted to waste the money on them, but they will sag again soon.
Ride height is important because as it gets lower you get excess toe-in and excess camber. The toe especially leads to cupping of the rear tires.
There is a good supplier of spring spacers on eBay believe it or not. I have done this to all my Aeros, and we have 5 of them in my family.
