Rusty Brake Lines - Rust belt Owner Warning 1 Saabers Like This Post! Posted by Dave The Ice Age Knave [Email] (#2068) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Dave The Ice Age Knave) on Tue, 21 Mar 2017 20:32:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
(To shorten to 37 words, jump to second paragraph below) Just after I publicly stated that the 9-5 was "well protected" against rust, the laws of the universe reached out and shook me to my senses. The tale began as I was addressing a gasoline drip below the fuel filter of our 2005 Arc. Those are the ones with the johnny-come-slowly quick disconnects that require advanced neanderthal tool-making abilities since no standard disconnect tools work. Anyway, the root cause was, thankfully, a pin hole in the body of the filter due to corrosion (surprise). As I undertook this repair, my flashlight noticed peeling and corrosion on the brake lines above and in the vicinity of the fuel filter. This was particularly evident where there was a bend in the line - a manufacturing process that
I could surmise would lead to stress on the external coating of the lines and cause eventual corrosion. Apart from the obvious safety risk should a line fail, the cost of accessing the lines underneath the fuel tank may prove uneconomic from a cost-benefit approach. I do have my vehicle under sprayed but it appears like these nooks and crannies are not beguiling to the application technicians. As a countermeasure (aka Save My Saab), I am seriously considering renting a hoist this summer for a couple of hours to seek out any untreated areas and apply corrosion inhibitor in a more judicious manner.
If you live in the Great Lakes rust belt, the hard to access brake lines above your fuel filter are rotting out. You can extend their life by applying a corrosion inhibitor directly to the visible lines.
