conventional oil Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Sat, 25 Mar 2017 17:02:48 In Reply to: Very light sludge. There are some mechanics, even SAAB mechanics who feel conventional oil is fine, and iirc the full synthetic oil specs came later, after 2000 when problems started cropping up... but the one thing that they say to do is change the oil very frequently! If you do that, you are not saving money on oil changes anyway vs synth, as the labour cost of an oil change at most quality garages exceeds the cost of the oil anyway (or at least nearly so)... given the known potential for problems, I would personally only use full synthetic in a 9-5.
FWIW I use Mobil 1 0W40 euro spec with a high quality oversized filter (from the pt cruiser) and I change it every 5000km. Not miles... km... that's about every 3k miles... and the oil looks black by then and this is a 2004 so the new pcv system. In my NA c900's I use normal 10w30 (or 5 in winter) castrol generally, and the normal sized filter and change it every 3000km and the oil usually looks kinda dark by then but not as gross as in the 9-5. Turbos are harder on oil and that should be accounted for.
Also note that short trips are far worse than highway driving and oil change intervals should be shortened accordingly.
The advice re cleaning this is probably fine. Keep an eye on the screen. I would not put a larger screen in - the engineers put a fine screen in because the pump is not as robust as in the 9000, so stuff that passes through a coarser screen may wreck your oil pump... also bad news!
An easy test can be to put a coat hanger up in the pan and see if you can fish out any sludge. There can be more down there than you might guess based on what you see at the top end.
One neat thing I have in one of my c900's is an oil pressure gauge. Not sure if one can do that for a 9-5 (and to be honest, I never actually watch it because it is a non-issue in that car), but if so, that might be a useful gadget?
